Garden 2020: Let’s Do This

Spring/Summer 2020

Here we are again, time to start gardening. My husband and I have spent the last couple of months preparing for this time of the year: SPRING! This year we are much more prepared for our second attempt at a vegetable garden. Raised garden bed, compost, mycorrhizae tablets, and a trellis. Not to mention that some of the veggies don’t do well with the mycorrhizae tablets, so we have separate planters for those plants.

Raised garden bed in the making. At this point, we are still mixing in the compost and top soil to create a rich environment for our vegetables. Down south, we have so much red dirt that we have to mix in our nutrients that are not provided by our clay-like dirt.

Veggies such as garlic, onion, broccoli, and spinach have been placed into their own planters away from the mycorrhizae tablets, but we still have compost and peat moss mixed into the planter soil for the added nutrients.

We have made it through the last frost of the winter, and now my biggest concern is all of the rain we receive this time of the year. Aloe vera does not require a lot of water, so I’m hoping that the heat of our sunny days will keep it dried out enough to keep it alive. We shall see what unfolds in the next few weeks.

We ordered a variety pack of heirloom seeds online and have our selection planted in our starter cups. Next update on the babies will be published when we have some sprouts showing. This is a very exciting adventure and I’m keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that Garden 2020 will be a fruitful project stepping us forward in our homesteading goals.

Stay tuned for more updates to come and Happy Planting from our garden to yours!
